How to Call Russia

Use a Phone Card

Dialing Russia direct can be very expensive - your long distance carrier may charge you over $3.00/minute. The connection that you get when using a phone card is still a good connection and it costs only a few cents per minute. Dial Russia

When your phone card tells you "Please enter the number to dial:"

Dial the United States country code to initiate an international call: 011
Dial the Russia country code: 7
Dial the the city code. This will be three digits if you are dialing to a cell phone or very large city, four digits if you are dialing to a land line in most cities, and five digits if you are dialing to a rural village. The following code is for Saratov: 8452
Dial the local number. For cell phones this will be seven digits, for land lines in the city it is six digits, and for rural villages it is five digits. ######

Finding the Area Code

Often you are only given the local phone number, which means that you need to find the area code before you can make the call. Try looking up your city on phonecodes.narod.ru.

Time Zones

Remember to account for the time difference when calling. You do not want to wake anyone up in the middle of the night. When the other party picks up the phone and starts speaking Russian, you will want to be prepared by having a Russian Translator conferenced in.
