For Adoptive Parents
RussianFamilySearch.comInformation and assistance in finding your
adopted child's birthmother is available at the Russian Family Search website.
This website is maintained by Mary Kay, an adoptive mother of a Russian child who
has help many other adoptive families contact birth-families to obtain medical
history, find out about orphaned siblings, or just to open a line of
communication. Mary has several experiences documented so that you know
what to expect if you choose to search for your child's birthmother.
If Mary can't provide exactly what you need, she can put you in touch with
the right people - translators, guides, adoption agencies, etc.
MyRussianRoots.com provides services to help you in your search.
Birthmother InterviewMany adoptive parents have found that they have a
need or desire to contact the birthmother of their child. Sometimes they want
geneological information. Other times they wish to open a line
of communication. Sometimes they have heard that there may be a sibling in
another orphanage. Some of this information I can research over the phone from
Phoenix. I also visit Russia, and it may be possible for me to do an interview
in person with the birthmother.
Medical HistorySome adopted children have medical conditions
that are difficult to diagnose and treat. Knowing the medical history of the
child can help the physician to decide on the correct course of treatment. Did
the birthmother or father smoke? Drink? Do drugs? Did they have hypertension?
Diabetes? Cancer? This may be important information if your child is fighting a
medical condition.
PhotographsMany familes want photographs of thier adopted child's past
and the culture of their land of birth. If you have sent someone to interview
the birthmother, this is a rare opportunity to collect that piece of your
child's history.
